This weekend we celebrated Memorial Day. We had company all weekend and then yesterday was a fantastic celebration for my little brother Chad who got married. I love spending time with people and visiting and talking and seeing relatives. It was a very fulfilling weekend.
Today was our first real day of summer vacation. I would have to say that I was in recovery mode. It was one of those days that at the end of the day I was feeling pretty down in the dumps. My house was a mess, the kids were fighting and I don't think I even looked in the mirror the whole day-
But then I started thinking about all the little victories we've had today- So I am going to list them so we can celebrate:
1)we got up and read scriptures together and had family prayer even though Nate was out of town
2) I took my children to line the street at Elkridge drive to welcome home the body of Cody's Touse who had been killed in Afghanistan we talked about patriotism freedom and respect
3) I made one healthy-ish meal for my children from canned chicken and leftover brown rice, which they whined about considerably, but in the end were asking for seconds
4) I got my six-year-old off to his baseball game in time and we watched part of the game
5) My two-year-old wore underwear the whole day- his only accident was right before bed when he was brushing his teeth
6) I took a nice little power nap on the couch for almost 30 minutes
7) I got to talk to a friend on the phone while I was feeding the twins
8) when they were not fighting, the kids were playing great together and the got some grass stains playing outside while we waited for the military procession.
9) we didn't turn on any movies or video games the whole day
10) all my kids were in their pajamas and ready for bed before 9:00
I say it was a day worth celebrating!Sara Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16500578628932377649noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092485579573991382.post-40101917872425666072013-05-23T15:29:00.002-07:002013-05-23T15:29:28.857-07:00To Homeschool or not to Homeschool- That is the QuestionSo here we are the end of another school year thinking about what to do next year. For the last year my kids have been attending liberty Academy charter school in a program called CAP three days a week. They absolutely loved it. my first grader and my third-grader were in the same class they loved their teacher and I was able to feel good about their education because with moving building a house being pregnant with twin's and moving again I wasn't in a great position to have a very consistent homeschool schedule.
In my heart, I always want to homeschool. I think that homeschooling can be the absolute best education. There are so many reasons that I love homeschool. I love the flexibility it offers us. I love that we can choose our content and study from classics and go on field trips. I love that my kids Play with each other and are best friends with each other. I always have these grand expectations of what we are going to accomplish and what we are going to do, but to be quite honest we always fall short of what we think we're going to do.
And I'm always doubting myself and wondering if I am going to ruin my kids. I wonder if they're going to think that the world revolves around them. I wonder if they're going to be too shy to try new things or to meet new people. Do I have the patience and the ability to keep our house in order to keep my kids on track to foster love of learning without major contention in our home?
And though it really doesn't matter I do sometimes worry about what people think and how my kids will be perceived or if they'll fit in with the kids in the neighborhood.
Next year that charter school program that we were doing is going to be gone there's a new director of liberty Academy, And the school is changing all its policies to reflect to that of American preparatory Academy in Draper.
I think, in general, it will be a very positive thing for the community and for the school. We went to a meeting last night that discussed the changes. They have a very structured methodology. Their test scores are outstanding and their curriculum is sound. They have high expectations when they don't mess around. Much of what the teachers are teaching is scripted. The children break into Achievement levels that can go across grade level. There are many things that I like about what I was hearing.
Sometimes the worst thing about homeschool is the lack of consistency the lack of discipline the lack of a strong work ethic- Will I really be able to teach my kids to work hard? Will I prepare them academically and socially for life?
Where and how to educate your kids is such a personal choice. It all comes down to what my commitment level is.
Homeschooling is a lot like the decision to have kids in the first place- it's between parents and God. There are so many opinions. And they are strong opinions. There are so many options and ways to do things. There's something for every style of parenting. I have the children that I do for a reason.
So what are we going to do next year?
I have absolutely no idea.Sara Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16500578628932377649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092485579573991382.post-39208650898754313172012-02-04T21:54:00.001-08:002012-02-04T21:54:15.263-08:00A Great Day in Paradise
We had a fantastic time at the museum last week. I think part of the fun is just getting ready. The week before Halloween, the whole family took a trip to Bullhead to go to the Halloween store. Here the boys are trying on helmets. It was decided that we would be a family of Vikings. We got a costume for Nate at the store, but headed to Jo-Ann's Fabric for the real fun!

And, of course, carving pumpkins is a great pre-Halloween Family Night.Sara Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16500578628932377649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092485579573991382.post-11791548040129126892011-11-01T11:17:00.001-07:002011-11-01T11:23:24.298-07:00Troy's 1st Birthday
My baby is one year old! My house as improved tremendously- How did I do it? I moved :) Not that that is a great solution, but we were renting and our year lease was up and we found a house that fit our needs a little better. After living in a big, old house in Maryland, that was so spread out and divided, I was so excited for the open floor plan. I thought it would be great to have my art room right by my kitchen and the laundry right there so conveniently and our homeschool room so handy- but every messy thing I did (art, cooking, laundry, kids projects) was right in my face all the time.
Now we have a play area in the garage (it is a very clean, well-lit, RV garage, so my workout room moved out there too), an eat-in kitchen that is separate from the family room, and best of all, a hobby room. It is a big room off the garage with two separate areas, plenty of storage, a utility sink, linoleum floors, and a north window in my studio area. That means our messiest activities: homeschool and creative projects, are totally separated from the living areas of our house. It is awesome! The other great thing is that there are NO toys in the boys' rooms. They do migrate a little, but all of the toys have a home in the garage- and it really is a nice place to play. The only kids things that have a home in the main part of the house are books!Sara Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16500578628932377649noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092485579573991382.post-64109069865022654112011-05-09T08:20:00.000-07:002011-05-09T08:45:22.754-07:00All My Problems Start Here<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-NHNzrKzz8cpnqYLX8iYb754cho7U4T09oIdsMYhpOiUJ7cNNLl0gfMUrKm4qYti_oPV0we9HIibRbSkIBYxR5UhiY_GYAq200fEh5mrVS8C8r02bNNImxQCk-oL5aIfrCqr4Nq_UWPU/s320/DSC_0011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604742138004351042" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAVflzWLDwRxzzSxE89dAhXAFsa4dsz2SWO21kAwkolM-urzBg4l3tawyfUgnzC-98A9VJaCIs_WPZCoNT_pr-_EJkKx-WHmbbno0_hZRcXgEmMkJEZ_R4A8LhWoI9F-PzCCtM-SV_69o/s320/DSC_0010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604742136094835570" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2zQETRQcnvzysBibE0tBKvt1J0pzfAtFYO1vvkNDkROK-cA4CbSoKzxFvziubzp7FGkWJbQxtKwr2hkFJ2KlUjBc7Cl8C0JgE6xl_McirQVjRRIJRp2R3sj-2vGBQ7fz-xAM7t6_MvoE/s320/DSC_0004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604742130091993698" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5V3S9N_pwW3CoKwYEf84S9cXoCUOiDZ5V1YuQubPTl8hJVUbkdjnImxWkTr2rClrYwnQydIASBazg2h6a-6c7VZ6vd3-9qmxUDQDkGa89q_y-0D_PqvQiUTqUAVU9L1BKrxyhb_v_xxI/s320/DSC_0003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604742131025749010" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK1SpIhPYadbOHsMFlPWS3yrt_dmy5nIxvD3aKalK5_R5rW9UBoe7gC8fiagcAHZFr-H3KlvLD9CHhtUKeFiP8LmJSzKWV8lj29FYpCOY6EnisrjeppM0l6OJzc1V1H1JF9moa0zqphp4/s320/DSC_0001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604742125790566386" />
Yesterday was Mother's Day. We had a lesson in church about work and personal responsibility. I have been thinking a lot about that topic because there seems to be one skill that has eluded me, and that is the womanly art of housekeeping. I have now been married 10 years. Unfortunately, my house has been messy MOST of that time. I have gotten better, but the mess makers in my house have increased and so I'd say it is just about a wash.
I've given myself exactly 20 minutes to work on this post and I have two previously occupied children now climbing on me, so I hope this makes sense.
I have more than once come to the conclusion that the main thing that hinders my ability to progress in this life is my inability to keep my house in order. I am a very ambitious person. I have a lot of lofty visions and goals and many things I'd like to be, but the thing that always seems to get in my way is the mess.
I know it takes time to keep up with house work, so I'm trying to change my priorities to put this at the top. I've tried a lot of books and programs checklists, professional organizers, etc., but I haven't really been able to keep up with any of it.
OK- enough whining-
THe point of this is not to whine. The point is to say that I am turning over a new leaf. The scriptures say that "I give men weakness that they may become strong." The prophet Nephi says, "I know that the father giveth no commandment unto the children of men save he prepare a way for them to accomplish the things that he has commanded them." If God told me to move a mountain, I'm pretty sure that I could do it, but what if he told me to move that pile of laundry? Sister Beck has said that "LDS women should be the best homemakers in the world" and that our primary job is to nurture and that another name for nurturing is HOMEMAKING. My house is a house of order and not a house of confusion
Just to be clear, these pictures are what my house looks like right now. This isn't its worst state, not it's best state- maybe a little worse than average, but pretty typical. I got up at 4:30, read my scriptures, prayed, wrote in my journal, fed the baby, worked out, made bread, did some dishes, packed a lunch, fed the family breakfast and now I have 2 min. left to work on this before I shower and start working on the house. More on this, but let the journey to being a Domestic Goddess begin.Sara Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16500578628932377649noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6092485579573991382.post-54622450285373495852011-03-27T15:04:00.000-07:002011-03-27T18:05:11.724-07:00Success!!!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr6aLzJuMDkXv1elRoj0dV6YbG1RraGGEVjE_J8JoGinOsc_bAUYguforUcHSDcewO2cZ5bOTSP1PucqEnenhHm0GOczf9ODoKygLaP57cYMH41Ywevb-epeTVjYn3s5IQm4B3_9qqSr8/s320/sourdough2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588926730073141746" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3AL5jCGqI2JGtAweIaPTlfGwA44q4CU-QxDYH7QogFUcltwTuC_vqs4xsLvmdn4lX_rglmIFgxS-98jlnhCQ-vDM6HmkyE80jfqxatK3iq0oCp-insq2EwVvxSCm8oG1S6fBv06Ajpz0/s320/sourdough1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588921255563684738" />
I've been stewing over this blog for over a year now. I've had a desire to share my various homemaking ventures, but it always seems like just another thing to do in my already chaotic life- And what is this blog supposed to be about? Originally, it was to be a place to promote bread making via Pantry Secrets, a method of bread making that inspired me enough to become certified as an instructor... But I haven't taught many classes, and I've started to abandon the quick and easy way and delve into the more complex realm of sourdough.
So I probably will post a thing or two about bread making, and a lot of things that don't have much to do with bread. Today, though, it is all about sourdough. Today I made an amazing batch of homemade whole wheat sourdough bread. Now, for those of you who are not accustomed to breadmaking, that may not sound like that big of a deal. And even to those who make homemade bread, that might not seem too impressive, but words cannot describe the sense of accomplishment I had at seeing my beautiful dough rising, and those gorgeous loaves baking in my oven.

It really isn't that hard, but if someone asked me for the recipe, I'm afraid they might feel like we did when we asked Nate's Grandma Randall for a recipe for "Squeaky Cheese". She said first you need some good acreage, a milk cow, someone willing to milk the cow morning and night, and so on. Well, to make a good loaf of sourdough bread, you first need a starter. A starter is just yeast, but it is a lot different from the yeast you can buy at the grocery store. It's more of a living breathing organism- not totally unlike a pet- that you have to nurture and feed. You can make a starter by mixing flour and water and letting it sit out for a while. Every day you pour some out and add a little more flour and water and eventually, you might have a good starter.

The development of my starter is probably a subject for another post altogether, so I'll save that, and just get on with what the process was for the bread I made today. Yesterday morning (or maybe it was Friday night), I got my starter out of the fridge and fed it. I fed it a few times so that by last night I had a good quart or more of fresh bubbly starter. I mixed it with a little more water and a little more than half of the flour my recipe called for. I mixed it together to make the sponge. Then I covered it and set it out on the counter. This morning I added oil, eggs, honey salt, and the rest of the flour and mixed/kneaded it in my Bosch for about 5 minutes. I oiled a big bowl and let it raise in the bowl while I was at church. When I got home from church it was almost ready to spill over the top of the bowl, so I punched it down and shaped it into loaves. Then I let it rise for a couple more hours until it had just about doubled in size before I baked it.

Most of my sourdough loaves have resembled paperweights. Last week I was totally on a roll and was making some great bread, when I blew it completely. I had put the dough in my oven with the light on to rise. I thought I'd just turn the oven on for a second so it would be a little warmer, but you guessed it, I got distracted and left the oven on. I didn't realize my mistake until the oven beeped to let me know it was up to temperature (350 degrees). I ran to the oven and frantically pulled out the melting plastic bowls and dumped the partially baked dough onto the counter. I had to throwthe bowls away, but amazingly, the dough that I salvaged rose just fine and baked up into some nice bread. Up until today, that was still my best whole wheat sourdough bread attempt.Sara Petersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16500578628932377649noreply@blogger.com0
